Security guards assaulted at Ichilov Hospital

After Elia Kadosh, 19, complained of bad treatment at the hospital, five men, believe to be her relatives, arrived at the hospital and beat several security guards who prevented them from getting to the medical staff; 'they came into ER and grabbed us, punched us and beat us really hard,' recounts guard; Kadosh and her father arrested on suspicion they orchestrated the attack.

Security guards at the Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv were attacked and beaten by five men early Thursday.

The scuffle broke out at around 2:40am, after Elia Kadosh, 19, from Jaffa, claimed to have received bad treatment at the hospital.

According to the police, Kadosh caused a disturbance at the ER while seeking medical treatment there and tried to steal a cellphone from one of the nurses. Security guards asked her to calm down, but she continued with her unruly behavior, threatening the guards.

About half an hour later, a vehicle stopped at the entrance to the ER. Five men, believed to be her relatives, got out of the car, which they parked illegally at the ambulance bay, and sought to enter the hospital.

Security guards stopped them from reaching the medical staff, and the five men beat them in response. The perpetrators fled the scene shortly thereafter. One of the suspects was allegedly armed with a gun, according to hospital management.

The three security guards who were beaten received treatment at the ER's trauma center, and their condition was defined as light-to-moderate. They are suffering from broken teeth, bruising to the face and body, and broken and fractured bones.

The medical and nursing staff was "left shocked, frightened and terrified following the violence," the hospital said.

One of the security guards recounted the assault. "I heard shouting and ran to the ER counter. I saw a woman and a man at her side jumping one of the security guards," said the 25-year-old Nati, a former Givati Brigade soldier.

"I took the man aside and asked him to calm down and not interrupt the medical staff's work. The girl started egging the man on, telling him he was a 'f****t who doesn't hit back,' and the man told her not to worry, he was going to bring his people over," Nati continued. It later transpired the man was the woman's father, Ilan Kadosh, 49.

"We called the police and within half an hour five men came into ER and grabbed us security guards, punched us and beat us really hard," Nati went on to say. "I tried to separate (the warring sides) and calm things down, but all of a sudden I got a really hard punch to the face and fell to the floor. They split my head open and broke two of my front teeth. Now, I'm a patient at the ER myself."

"It's a shame about what happened," he added. "We try to protect the medical staff, but I didn't think I'd find myself in such a serious incident at work. I'm sure if they had managed to get past us, they would've gotten to the doctors and nurses, and that would have been a disaster."

The hospital filed a complaint with the police, which launched an investigation into the incident.

The hospital also said the patient's family members had threatened doctors, nurses and administrators at the hospital in the past and had to be removed from the facility by security.

Elia Kadosh and her father Ilan were arrested, and their remand was extended by five days and four days respectively.

A police representative said during the remand hearing that Elia Kadosh had asked the men to come to the hospital and had orchestrated the attack. One of the men, he said, told the security guards at the hospital that Kadosh had asked them to "take care" of the guards.

Kadosh also allegedly attacked policewomen, "spat in their face and assaulted them," according to the police representative.

Following the decision that they remain in police custody, Elia Kadosh shouted to the judge, "The cop beat me up," while her father Ilan said, "Sluts. This is what you do to innocent people?"

Attorney Assaf Gonen, who represents both father and daughter, rejected the claim there was any connection between the patient and the assault.

"Even if the suspect had called—and she didn't—one of her friends, telling him she wasn't receiving treatment and asking him to help her, which developed into the scuffle, it certainly doesn't tie her directly to the assault on the security guards," Gonen said.

He said his client "approached the doctor and told her, 'Can I please receive treatment? Please take care of me.' After the doctor ignored her, as she claims, she did indeed try to take a phone to call her personal doctor. The (ER) doctor called the security guard and he, she claims, acted aggressively, shoved her and cuffed her hands and feet as if she were a common criminal. After about three hours she called her father, with the police's approval, and he arrived there to be told he was under arrest."

Police are still looking for the remaining suspects, with one 30-year-old Rishon Lezion resident arrested several hours after the remand hearing.

"We will show zero tolerance towards the assault of public servants, and we will use all of the tools at our disposal to bring the criminals to justice," the police said.

Prof. Ronni Gamzu, the director-general of the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, said he had decided to post a police officer at the ER around the clock.

"I call on the public security minister to increase his involvement on the issue, the police commission to take steps on the national level, and the Tel Aviv Police to not ease up until the criminals are arrested and prosecuted. Mostly, I expect the justice system to give them a harsh punishment that would finally deter anyone who would turn against doctors, nurses and other health system employees," Gamzu said.

Health Minister Yaakov Litzman told Ynet he was "outraged" by the footage of the assault. "We must use a firm hand in dealing with any case of violence against medical personnel. Cases like this must not happen again," he said.

A protest rally was held outside the Ichilov Hospital on Thursday following news of the incident, with medical personnel carrying signs saying "No more violence" and "Our safety is your safety."
