Minister Gila Gamliel visits Cairo

In shadow of massive Sinai terror attack, Regional Conference for the Promotion of Gender Equality held in Cairo; Israel is represented by Minister of Social Equality Gamliel only days after she calls for a Palestinian state in Sinai.

After years of no Israeli ministerial presence in Egypt, the Minister of Social Equality, Gila Gamliel, paid a visit to Cairo, Sunday, to participate in the Regional Conference for the Promotion of Gender Equality that was held in the Egyptian capital despite the massive terror attack in the Sinai.

The minister was greeted by the Israeli ambassador to Egypt, David Govrin, who only recently returned to Egypt after a nine month hiatus in which the Israeli embassy was closed due to security concerns.

Gamliel's attendance comes in the wake of her comments last week in which she said that a Palestinian state can only be established in the Sinai Peninsula.

Gamliel represented Israel at the regional conference, sponsored by the European Union and the Egyptian Government. Jordan, Morocco and other countries also participated.

"Walking the streets of Cairo, I can sense the pain in people's eyes, in the public discourse and in the media. Despite the Sinai terror attack the Egyptian government is determined that the conference be held," said Minister Gamliel. "This is proof of the steadfastness of the Egyptian people who, like Israel, are facing murderous terror attacks while maintaining regional stability and cooperation".
