Thousands of police officers deployed in Jerusalem ahead of Pence visit

Highway 1 to be closed to traffic from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem as US vice president lands in Israel at around 6 pm; capital's King David Street to be closed from 1 pm Sunday until end of visit on Tuesday evening.

Thousands of Israeli Police and Border Police officers, as well as volunteers, will be deployed across Jerusalem on Sunday afternoon ahead of US Vice President Mike Pence's arrival in the capital Sunday evening.

 

 

As part of the operation, dubbed "Blue Shield 2," police will close Highway 1—the main road connecting Tel Aviv and Jerusalem—at around 6 pm from the Ganot interchange to Sakharov Gardens. At the same time, access to Highway 1 will be blocked from Highway 6 at the Ben Shemen interchange, and cars will be diverted to Road 443.

Jerusalem's King David Street will be closed to traffic from around 1 pm in both directions, until the end of the visit on Tuesday evening.

 

Intermittent road closures will take place in the following Jerusalem streets starting 8 pm Sunday: Sakharov, Weizmann, Shazar, Ramban, Paris Square, Washington and Keren HaYesod.

 

Several streets will remain closed all day Monday, including: Plumer, Jabotinsky, HaNasi, HaAri, Aza, Nayot, Herzog, Shneor Zalman, Burla and Balfour.

 

The following routes will experience intermittent closures on Tuesday, from the morning hours till the afternoon: Plumer, Jabotinsky, HaNasi, HaAri, Aza, Herzog, Shneor Zalman, Herzl, David Remez, Derech Hebron, Ben Zvi, Shazar, Weizmann, Ben Gurion and Sakharov Gardens.

 

Highway 1 will be closed to traffic ahead of Pence's departure on Tuesday afternoon from Sakharov Gardens to the Ganot interchange. Access from Highway 1 to Highway 6 will be blocked at the Ben Shemen interchange, and cars will be diverted to Road 443. Police are advising drivers to use alternative roads.
