Syrian TV reported on Tuesday that Israel attacked a target near Damascus international airport in the early hours of the morning.

Reports say two Israeli missiles fell in the vicinity of the airport. So far there is no information about casualties or damage.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor, based in Britain, said the strike targeted weapons depots and warehouses belonging to non-Syrian militias, most likely Hezbollah.

Several social media reports said that over the last few days there has been an increased presence of Iranian jets in the area.

The observatory also said that Syrian air defence systems failed to intercept the missiles, and added that an explosion was heard at 1am near the airport, caused by missiles fired by Israeli planes from the direction of the Golan Heights.

According to some reports two other missiles were intercepted by the Syrian aerial defense system.

The Syrian state news agency SANA, reported that the attack was conducted as part of the “Zionist enemy’s support for terrorists and the goal is to uplift their morale, in light of the losses they’ve experienced recently.”

A Russian military source confirmed the Israeli missiles were launched outside of Syria, presumably from the Golan Heights.

Over the last few months several strikes have been carried out in Syria, including against an airport. Israel has admitted to being involved in some of the attack.

Last week, a White House official told CNN that Israel is responsible for an airstrike that was carried out against Syria on June 19 which left scores of pro-regime fighters dead.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has in the past repeatedly said that he will not allow Iran to establish a proxy militias or terror groups in Syria. It is still unknown whether Israel is responsible for this latest attack.
