Airstrike on area held by ISIS in eastern Syria kills 30

BEIRUT - An airstrike in an area controlled by the Islamic State group in eastern Syria has killed at least 30 civilians and wounded many others, Syrian state media and a war monitor said Friday.

State news agency SANA blamed warplanes of the US-led coalition for the Thursday night attack that it said killed 30 and wounded dozens. It said the attacks targeted the villages of Baghouz and Sousa on the east bank of the Euphrates near the town of Boukamal.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the airstrike hit an ice factory that dozens of families were using as a shelter near Sousa close to the Iraqi border. It said at least 54 people were killed including 28 civilians mostly from Iraq while the rest were IS gunmen.

The US military did not respond to calls by The Associated Press for comments on the report.
