While adverts for the game have been running since August, it has only recently gotten attention after YouTube blogger Piero Rocco uploaded the disturbing footage from the game, showing prisoners being murdered in various ways—including being suffocated in gas chambers—with heavy metal music playing in the background.
"Due to widespread misinformation about the game in various TV outlets and other media, we are forced to freeze development for an undetermined time,” Alexey Kutischev, one of the developers, announced on his Facebook page.
The Ukranian developers of the game say it allows the players to also assume the role of a prisoner trying to escape, and added that they will re-release the game once the settings are redesigned.
"After an attempt to destroy the game in its initial design … The location now is Antarctica, or just any snow-covered location,” said another developer, Dimitry Dybin.
In the initial advertisements for the game, it appears to be set at a death camp in Poland, which later prompted the Polish authorities to open an investigation against the company, Alien Games, under the law recently passed by the Polish government that states anyone making reference to “Polish death camps” will be liable for fines or jail sentences.
