Snowstorm on Mt. Hermon

Israel hit by snowstorms, gales in first big freeze of the winter

Temperatures in the country dip to record lows this winter as rain spreads from the north to the center of the country; Mount Hermon closes for visitors as the site is hit by snowstorms.

Israelis shivered and fought the winds as another round of inclement weather hit the country Sunday, with temperatures dipping to the winter's new low. Rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms swept down from the top of the country to the southern coastal plain, and in the north more than 20mm of rain have dropped since Saturday evening, according to the Western Galilee’s meteorological center. Meanwhile, Mount Hermon, where Israel has its sole skiing facility, was closed to visitors due to blizzard conditions.

Strong winds were expected to spread throughout the country Sunday, except in the south, where it was expected to be misty and dry. Flood warnings were in place in the north for Sunday afternoon, as the rain was expected to spread and strengthen.
