President Rivlin mourns as former Chief Justice Meir Shamgar is laid to rest

President Reuven Rivlin delivered a eulogy as former Supreme Court Chief Justice Meir Shamgar was laid to rest on Tuesday.

"You were dedicated to protecting human rights and the rule of law," said President Rivlin. "You have stressed the importance of checks and balances between the different authorities, balances aimed at preventing authorities from becoming overpowered, through mutual supervision and control.

"You have reshaped the role of the attorney general from the ground up. The mark you have left turned the attorney general and the entire Department of Justice to strong and independent bodies, committed only to the public good".
