How much do we spend in Tel Aviv?
Eighteen percent of Israelis visit city for shopping, recreation activities on weekly basis, spending average of NIS 6,600 every year, new poll reveals
The Israeli public arriving in Tel Aviv for shopping and recreation activities spends an astronomic sum of NIS 23 billion (about $6.4 billion) on entertainment, clothes and food – an average of NIS 6,600 ($1,838) per person, according to a new survey conducted by the Market Watch Institute for the Tel Aviv Tourism Association.
The poll was aimed at examining ways to create additional entertainment and cultural centers in the city. It included 500 respondents over the age of 16, all of whom are Israeli citizens who do not live in Tel Aviv but visit the city for recreation activities, representing an audience of nearly four million people.
The survey revealed that 42% of the public visit Tel Aviv once every month or several months, 18% arrive once a week, 10% arrive every few weeks, 14% visit the city one a year and the rest once every few years.
It was also revealed that 42% of the total expenses of those visiting Tel Aviv are spent on shopping, 30% are spent on entertainment, culture, recreation and leisure, 14% on food, 3% on public transportation, 7% on private transportation (including parking, petrol, etc), and 4% on health and cosmetics.
Following the survey, The Tel Aviv Tourism Association, the city's Hotel Association and the Tourism Ministry launched a campaign under the banner, "Waiting for you – Tel Aviv-Jaffa," offering a slew of benefits and sales to the Israeli audience who will choose the city as its vacation destination during the High Holidays.
The campaign's message is that Tel Aviv is not just a business metropolis, but a main tourism city with good hotels for every price, a rich history, places of entertainment, cultural shows and many attractions. The campaign's budget is estimated at NIS 700,000 ($195,000).
