Cell phone erotica blocked to minors

New Communication Ministry regulation aims to block erotic mobile phone content to minors

Communication Ministry Director General Avi Balashnikov amended this weekend the cellular companies' operation permits in a step aimed at limiting the access of minors to erotic services available through third generation cellular technologies.

These services include surfing cellular portals, receiving multimedia files, viewing clips and photos, etc.

The amendment to the permits states that access to erotic services will be blocked by default to all users, with only adult users 18 and above able to request access after their age is verified.

The amendment will be effective beginning March 30 2006.

According to Balashnikov, protecting minors and preventing them from being exposed to erotic contents is a highly important objective that the Ministry has placed as one of its top priorities.

Balashnikov said the ministry will continue monitoring technological advancements in order to keep regulations in line with new technologies.

The new amendment joins a series of previous revisions issued by the Ministry of Communication to regulate the issue of blocking minors' access to erotic contents provided through both and mobile phones.
