Creditors seek Eyal Shani's arrest

Celebrity chef's financial troubles worsen as trustees ask court to jail him over his debts

Celebrity chef Eyal Shani's financial trouble have grown worse, as his court-appointed trustees are now seeking his arrest, citing he is continuously defaulting on his debt payments.

Shani, who – among other things – is one of the judges on the Israeli version of Master Chef –filed for bankruptcy in 2011. His various assets went into receivership later that year and he was ordered to pay creditors NIS 1.45 million ($385,000) over the next two years as part of his debt settlement.

According to Yedioth Ahronoth, two of Shani's trustees have petitioned for a bench-warrant against him. The court has reportedly granted the motion.

Shani's lawyers motioned for a stay, saying that given the chef's minimal sources of income, he pays off  "as much as he can, when he can."

Shani's financial woes date back over a decade. The once-owner of three of Israel's top-rated restaurants eventually accumulated NIS 5 million ($1.33 million) in debt.

Eyal Shani was unavailable for comment.
