Gaza Strip – An Israeli citizen was wounded Tuesday when a Palestinian opened fire near the Morag settlement in the southern Gaza Strip. A group of laborers were working on the fence surrounding the settlement when the incident occured. IDF soldiers were deployed between the workers and the first row of Palestinian houses in the city of Rafah, just several dozen meters away. IDF forces returned fire, but the sniper could not be identified. Magen David Adom workers administered first aid at the scene, and the victim was evacuated by military helicopter to Soroka Hospital in Beer Sheva. His condition is listed as moderate-to-serious. Initial investigations showed the worker was not wearing a bulletproof vest despite Gaza Beach Regional Council regulations that contractors must provide safety equipment for workers. Resistance Committee claims responsibility The Palestinian Popular Resistance Committee claimed responsibility for the attack. Group spokesman Abu Avir told Ynet the attack was in response to Israeli violations of the cease-fire. He said his organization has warned they would not be bound by the cease-fire reached by several Palestinian factions in Cairo several weeks ago, and said Israel continues to destroy homes and strike at innocent people. “We will continue our activities until it becomes clear that Palestinian blood is no different and no cheaper than Israeli blood, and until all Palestinian demands for a cease fire, including the release of prisoners, has been met,” he said. Meanwhile, Palestinian Minister for Civil Affairs Mohammed Dahlan met with the government’s operations coordinator in the territories earlier Tuesday, to discuss the easing of restrictions on Palestinian civilians. - Efrat Weiss contributed to this report
