JERUSALEM - Nuclear spy Mordechai Vanunu has petitioned the High Court Sunday morning, in an attempt to overturn a decision to extend restrictions on him for a year following his release from prison. Vanunu is forbidden from communicating with foreigners, and must inform the authorities whenever he plans on leaving the borders of Jerusalem. Vanunu’s lawyers, Michael Sefarad and Avigdor Feledman, claim that the decision to extend restrictions on Vanunu amounts to sentencing him to another year of isolation. Last April, Interior Minister Ofir Pines-Paz extended the restrictions on Vanunu. In a letter he sent to Feldman, Pines explained that Vanunu is still in possession of sensitive information from the period he worked in the nuclear research site in Dimona. 'It would be irresponsible to allow Vanunu leave country' Pines said that there was a substantial threat that Vanunu would publicize this information if he were allowed to leave Israel, thereby harming national security. “The fact that Vanunu systematically violated injuctions place on him, obligates me to conclude that this pattern of behavior will be repeated," he said. "It would therefore be irresponsible to allow Vanunu leave the country,” wrote Pines. The interior minister emphasized that the restrictions placed on Vanunu were not motivated by a wish to punish him further.
