RAFAEL Advanced Defense Systems was contracted by the Indian Military to supply its air force with the SPYDER air defense system, India's Asian Defense magazine reported Thursday.

The $1 billion deal will see RAFAEL supply the Indian Air Force with 18 SPYDER systems between 2011 and 2012. The system is capable of intercepting various airborne threats in a 25-mile radius.

SPYDER uses Python-5 and Derby air-to-air missiles as well as an advance radar system.

Israel Aerospace Industries subsidiary ELTA will be used as a subcontractor in the deal.

According to Asian Defense, the India's cabinet voted in favor of the deal on Wednesday. RAFAEL supplied the Indian air force with SPYDER systems in the past, in a deal amounting to $270 million.

The deal has made Israel India's primary weapons supplier.
