The consumer price index continued to climb in August, for the sixth consecutive month. Last month, the CPI rose by 0.5%,
after a 1.1% rise in July and a 0.9% rise in May.
Since the start of the year, the CPI rose by 3.7%, and in the past 12 months, it rose a total of 3.1%. The raise in taxes was the main contributor to the change.
Central Bureau of Statistics data showed that the food price index in August rose slightly by 0.2%. Significant increases were noted in the prices of fruits and vegetables: The fresh vegetable index rose by 9.2%, and the fresh fruit index rose 2.5%.
The numbers show that the price of beets continues to climb, increasing a whopping 48.7% last month, following a 40% rise in July.
The price of cabbage rose 26.1%, zucchini prices rose 17%, pepper rose 16.7%, cucumbers rose 16.3%, and tomatoes are now 14.8% more expensive.
On the other hand, the price of squash dropped 2.4%, and the price of eggplants went down 2.3%. Melons and watermelons are also significantly more affordable, with prices dripping 30.2% and 28.9% respectively.
Orange prices went up 10%, and apples are now 9.1% more costly. Mango prices dropped 23.6% and the price of grapes declined 23.1%.
As for other food products, a 2% rise in the price of fresh beef was noted, a 4.5% increase in cookie and biscuit prices was recorded, and noodle and pasta prices dropped 4.2%.
A 1.2% increase was noted in the housing index, and the rent index rose 0.4% last month. The price of water for household consumption rose 7.3%, and the price of sanitization and extermination products dropped 3.3%.
Clothing and footwear prices dropped 7.8%, most likely due to the many end-of-season sales. The clothing index dropped 9.1%, and the footwear index declined 2.4%.
The CPI in the field of education, culture and entertainment rose 1.1%, with the sharpest increase noted in hotels and convalescent homes (16.2%), and tickets to sporting events.
Meanwhile, the price of notebooks dropped 4.8%, as did the price of organization trips in Israel.
Transportation and communication prices dropped 0.5% in August, with the price of flights abroad dropping 1.6%. However, the price of car rentals in Israel rose 5.2%, and train ticket prices rose 2.7%.
