3 Hebron residents arrested in Jerusalem

Police officers stationed near Jaffa Gate thwart terror attack after spotting suspicious vehicle carrying three young Palestinians. Suspects tell investigators were planning to stab 'a Jew or a security officer'

Three Palestinian residents of the West Bank city of Hebron were arrested Monday evening near Jaffa Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem. The three admitted that they had planned to carry out a stabbing attack.

The three were arrested in a Fiat car after raising the suspicion of police officers stationed in the area. A knife was found inside the vehicle.

The suspects were taken in for questioning and told their investigators that their plan was to use the knife to stab "a Jew or a security officer".

This is not the first time a stabbing attack has been foiled in the capital thanks to the security forces' alertness. In March, Officers conducting a routine patrol on Moshe Sneh Street spotted two suspicious Arab youths and detained them to conduct a search. The youths fought with the officers and a knife fell to the ground during the struggle. There were no injuries in the incident. Questioning revealed that the two had planned to commit a stabbing attack in protest against Israel's recent military offensive in Gaza.

In October 2008, a 20-year-old Arab man attempted to stab an Israel Nature and National Parks Service inspector in Jerusalem's Yad Avshalon neighborhood, near the Mount of Olives. The inspector drew his weapon and was able to overpower his assailant, unharmed.

The attack came on the heels of another stabbing attack, carried out in the capital's Gilo neighborhood three days earlier. The attack claimed the life of 86-year-old Avraham Ozeri, and left a police officer wounded.
