Rightist march reaches Jericho

After three days march, youth attempt to enter city, 17 detained. MK Ben-Ari: Border Guard use of violence becoming norm

A parade of rightwing organizations reached Jericho Monday after three days of marching. Dozens of members, declaring their intention to settle the "land of our forefathers," clashed with Border Guards who were compelled to forcefully evacuate some of the marchers and detain 17 for questioning.

The march to Jericho was disrupted two days ago near Har Bracha when the IDF detained three of the marchers who were wanted for questioning, plus four of the organizers.

Later, 31 of the approximately 100 marchers were dispersed, but the group re-gathered and continued through the West Bank.

Upon reaching Jericho the group broke up. Some of the marchers entered the Naaran synagogue just north of the city, while a group of young women approached the main entrance to the city.

Border Guards stopped both groups. The marchers said police acted violently and that three young women were hurt.

MK Michael Ben-Ari (National Union), who participated on Sunday, said Border Guard violence had become a behavioral pattern.

"This is not law enforcement but law violation," he said. He added that the time had come for Defense Minister Ehud Barak to stop using his position as a means of acting against "those who love the country."
