Netanya gas blast: Suspects to get bail

Police expected to ask court to impose bail restrictions of gas technician, alleged metal thief linked to explosion which killed 4, injured 90

PazGaz technician Daniel Yisrael and Rahamim (Rami) Gueta, the two men suspected of the deadly Netanya gas blast, will be arraigned Wednesday at the Petah Tikva District Court.

The police are not expected to object to the two's motion for bail, but will ask the court to impose bail restrictions.

Yisrael is suspected of negligent homicide and criminal negligence, while Gueta is suspected of manslaughter and theft.

Three women and one man were killed and some 90 others were lightly wounded in last Thursday's blast, which took out a four-storey building adjacent to Ha'atzmaut Square in downtown Netanya.

The police are seeking full house arrest for both, for 10 days, as well as a hefty bail and a restraining order barring them from going near the blast site; as well as a 30-day suspension for Yisrael from PazGaz.

Residents of the building have been given temporary housing in other parts of Netanya, while the City renovated the building.

The explosion all but razed 39 apartments and damaged nearly 100 more. Dozens of local business were also damaged.

Hasharon Subdistrict Police Commander Brigadier-General Shimon Shomroni said Tuesday that the investigation into the blast could take up to a year.

Meanwhile, a chillingly similar disaster was averted in Haifa overnight, when a gas leak was detected in a building in the city's Ha'Nasi Boulevard.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and were able to contain the leak within minutes.

As a precautionary measure, dozens of tenants were temporarily evacuated, while firefighters removed nearly a quarter-ton of gas off the premises.
