Tourists nabbed with cocaine inside stomachs

An x-ray examination reveals 2.5 kilograms of liquid cocaine concealed inside condoms in stomachs of Bolivian couple arriving at Ben-Gurion Airport; drug content worth some $200,000

Ben-Gurion Airport detectives stopped a tourist couple arriving from Bolivia on Thursday, only to discover they were hiding cocaine in their stomachs.

A 43-year-old man accompanied by a 25-year-old woman landed in the Israeli airport on Wednesday, managing to raise suspicion of security officers.

As airport detectives took the couple aside for questioning, they were surprised to discover, during an x-ray examination, that the Bolivian tourists were smuggling 2.5 kilograms of liquid cocaine in their stomachs concealed inside 85 condoms.

The two were later taken to the Tel Aviv Central Police Unit's drugs division, where they laid the hidden contents out on the table: 2.5 kilograms of liquid cocaine worth around $200,000.

Investigators are currently trying to establish where the drugs were headed for, and are expected to request an extension of their remand.

Police officials remarked that in recent months a growing number of drug couriers have tried to enter Israel with liquid cocaine hidden inside their bodies. Most of them arrived directly from South America while others take a detour through Europe.
