Security Council condemns terror attacks on Israelis abroad

Security Council says 'any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable regardless of their motivations.' Israeli ambassador: UN broke 7-year silence

WASHINGTON - The UN Security Council condemned Thursday night "in the strongest terms" the terrorist attack in New Delhi, India aimed at Israel’s diplomatic personnel, as well as and the recent attempted terrorist attack in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The Security Council reaffirmed that "terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to peace and security and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable regardless of their motivations, whenever and by whomsoever committed."

The condemnation was issued a week after Israel's ambassador to the UN, Ron Prosor sharply attacked Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Security Council for not condemning the attacks "as they occurred."

Prosor told Ynet Thursday evening "I am proud of our achievement (UN condemnation), after seven years of UN silence amid the waves of terror attacks against Israel."

The most recent UN condemnation of a terror attack against Israel came in 2001, following the deadly suicide bombing at the Dolphinarium in Tel Aviv.

The UN condemnation underscored the "need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice, and urged all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with all relevant authorities in this regard."

Such a condemnation requires the approval of all 15 Security Council members – including Morocco and Pakistan.

Prosor issued a statement saying the UN condemnation "is being heard around the world – from the hospital in which injured Israeli Tal Koren is being treated to the hallways of every Israeli embassy that is threatened by Iranian terror.

"The Security Council's unequivocal condemnation constitutes a significant step in the fight against terror. The Security Council has not (condemned) terror attacks on Israel and its citizens in the past seven years," he said.

Last week a number of explosions rocked Bangkok. Thai police arrested a number of Iranians suspects and said they planned to attack Israeli diplomats.
