Praying anew: Between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur

Shalom Hartman Institute hosts series of events for High Holidays addressing psychological, theological, spiritual aspects of prayer

The Shalom Hartman Institute and municipal partners will host a series of events for the High Holidays entitled "Praying Anew."

The events, which will take place between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur (in Jerusalem on Thursday, in Modiin on Sunday, and in Ramat Hasharon on Monday), will address psychological, theological, and spiritual aspects of prayer.

The Jerusalem and Ramat Hasharon events will begin with a discussion between two Hartman Institute researchers – Rani Jaeger and Prof. Avi Sagi, author of "Wounded by Prayer - Prayer After the Death of God."

Sagi’s book re-examines the metaphysical and religious assumptions underlying the discourse on prayer. Among other things, the author claims that people can pray without believing in God.

The book presents instances of prayer from throughout Hebrew literature that do not assume the existence of God and deploys a fascinating typology of different types of prayer.

Following the keynote lecture in Jerusalem, a series of workshops led by Hartman Institute researchers and guest lecturers will address various aspects of prayer.

Lecturers will include Shalom Hartman scholars Dr. Melila Hellner-Eshed (who will speak in English) and Channa Pinchasi, who will be joined by Dr. Elie Holzer (Shma Kolenu—Beit Midrash for Community and Prayer), Shai Zarchi (Kehillat Nigun HaLev), and Uri Kroizer and Yair Harel (Both of Hazmana LaPiyut).

The event finale will be a joint appearance of Erez Lev Ari and Rabbi Menachem Froman.

The Jerusalem event will be held on Thursday evening at the Shalom Hartman Institute (11 Gedalyahu Alon St.) Admission is free unless otherwise indicated.

Full details on all the three events can be found on the Hartman Institute website .
