IDF chief Gantz to stay on for fourth year

Netanyahu decides to extend Benny Gantz's term, praises his leadership 'through some of most complex challenges Israel has seen'

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accepted the defense minister's recommendation and has decided to extend IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz 's term by another year. The government will vote on the matter next week.

Gantz, 54, was appointed army chief in February 2011. His long military career has including a long line of senior positions, most notably Northern Command chief, commander of the Ground Forces and deputy chief of staff.

 

On Wednesday, Netanyahu met with Gantz and informed him of his decision. He praised Gantz and said, "In the past three years, the chief of staff has led the IDF with notable success through some of the most complex security challenges Israel has seen.

 

"Benny Gantz's leadership is marked by principled integrity, professionalism and determination. Myself, the defense minister, the chief of staff and the heads of the defense establish work tirelessly to keep Israel's citizens safe and secure Israel's future."

 

Meanwhile, Gantz has sent a letter to IDF soldiers on the 40th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War. "Having the benefit of past experience – she shall remain vigilant, ready for battle," he wrote.

 

"The IDF is on its guard and ready as ever. Our eyes and ears are open as the storm around us unfolds. The battles waged by our neighbors are still confined to their territories, but any bullet or threat that crosses into Israel is met with an appropriate response by us."

 

"It is our duty to meet any task and if it comes to it – bring victory again."
