'Terrorist' may have been fleeing abuse

Friends of a woman temporarily arrested for allegedly planning terror attack say she was running away from abusive husband and was reported as a potential terrorist by a disapproving relative.

Question marks remain in the case of an Arab-Israeli 28-year-old woman who was arrested in Nahariya after a police search for her on Monday evening for fear that she was planning to commit a terror attack.

A short time after her arrest and questioning, it became clear that she had no intention of committing an attack and she was released.

But police have refused to publicly state who first sounded a warning about the woman or where she was released to after questioning. Ynet has been told that the woman is in a hiding place, fearing the violence that she allegedly experienced in her home life. Although large numbers of law enforcement participated in the search, it seems that no one was arrested for causing a false alarm.

"Following suspicion of a security incident a few days ago in Nahariya, an investigation by security sources discounted suspicion of criminal or terror-related activity," said police. "The young woman was released after she was questioned. At this point we cannot be more specific about how we received information about the woman's intent to commit a terror attack."

The woman is originally a resident of Taibe and moved to Jerusalem after getting married. Sources close to the woman told Ynet on Thursday that she was forced to marry a man against her will and had experienced life-threatening abuse throughout her life. They said relatives did not want to help her and so she fled.

"One the day she left home, one of her relatives falsely accused her of intending to commit a terror attack in the area, and unfortunately the state painted her as a terrorist," said a friend. "The truth is that she's miserable. She fell victim to a conflict within the family. She paid the price in the end."

According to friends, the woman did not return home. "It's difficult to believe that she'll return after everything she went through," said one. "The state should provide her with the required aid."
