Winter time making a comeback

Israel to move back to standard time Saturday night

Clocks to be reset one hour backwards from 2 am to 1 am early Sunday, just before Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. Daylight saving time to return in late March

Israel will be returning to standard time this weekend, as the yearly daylight saving time period comes to its end. At 2 am on the night between Saturday and Sunday, clocks will be reset one hour backwards to 1 am.

This year's daylight saving time lasted 184 days.

According to the Daylight Savings Act (DST) adopted in 1992, Israel inducts summer time every year at 2 am, on the last Friday before April 2, while standard time must be reintroduced at 2 am on the Sunday between Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, and Yom Kippur.

Daylight saving time will return on March 26, 2010, and will last until September 12 – a total of 170 days.

While Israel enjoys many days of sun every year, the summer time in Israel lasts only 170 days on average. For the sake of comparison, in the United States daylight saving time lasts 238 days. The summer time is longer in European Union country and in Russia as well, lasting from mid March to late October, as it is more effective in the autumn and spring than in Israel.

Countries where daylight saving time is shorter than in Israel include Egypt with 154 days, Australia with 155 days, and Brazil with 134 days.
