Budapest mayor blocks theater nomination

Following criticism by Jewish groups and theater professionals, Hungarian capital's mayor says will acts against appointment of far-right politician as artistic director due to his racist writings

The mayor of Budapest says he will block the appointment of Istvan Csurka, a far-right politician and playwright, as artistic director of a city theater because of his racist writings.

Mayor Istvan Tarlos said Wednesday he would ask Gyorgy Dorner, an actor with links to far-right groups who will become the director of Budapest's New Theater in February, to refrain from employing Csurka.

Tarlos appointed Dorner, so Dorner would have to comply with his request.

Csurka's selection was widely criticized by Hungarian and foreign theater professionals, as well as Jewish groups.

Tarlos said Csurka's articles were "incompatible with European political culture." The mayor said, however, that he would not oppose the performance of Csurka's plays at the theater.
