Israel's Ambassador to Cairo Yaakov Amitai asked Egyptian authorities to step up his security following recent attacks on Israeli diplomats in India and Georgia, the London-based al-Hayat newspaper reported Thursday.
According to the report, Amitai and his security team returned to Cairo from Amman on Monday after leaving Egypt a week ago for the eighth time since the envoy assumed his post.

A security source told al-Hayat that upon landing the ambassador demanded airport authorities to secure the cars of Israeli embassy staff who came to the airport to greet him and take him back to his office.
Amitai fears an assassination attempt after terrorists targeted Israeli diplomats in India, Thailand and Georgia last week. The first incident saw an explosive device being detonated near the Israeli embassy in New Delhi injuring the wife of an Israeli diplomat.
In another incident, an embassy worker in Tbilisi found an explosive device in a vehicle parked near the building. The device was dismantled and there were no injuries. A day later it was reported that Iranian terrorists plotted to target the Israeli ambassador in Thailand.
Last September, Egyptian protesters raided the Israeli embassy in Cairo. The crowd stormed the building, removed the Israeli flag and threatened to harm the security team which was inside the building at the time. The guards were eventually rescued by Egyptian commandos.
