A joint program presented in the convention handles some 2,000 cases of children who were sexually assaulted every year.
According to a study examining the program in the past four years, half of those who complain are victims of incest, rape and sodomy. More than 50% of the victims have been assaulted more than once, and at least 15% have been attacked by more than one person.
'Worthless statements'
The subject was discussed five days after it was revealed that retired Judge Nissim Yeshaya said “there are girls who enjoy being raped” during an appeal hearing.
Following the inappropriate remarks, the Knesset's Committee on the Status of Women held a hearing Monday regarding the training of judges on matters of sexual assault.
Justice Minister Tzipi Livni said in the Knesset discussion that "when such statements are heard from a judge, it takes us back to the past. In the short time that I have been in office we have already twice heard this kind of worthless statements from judges towards women and it requires us to see how it is treated, since these judges are supposed to judge these victims."
