Israel's left-wing party Meretz, in danger of not passing the election threshold, got some help from an unlikely source overseas on Tuesday – Jewish American comedian Sarah Silverman.
On Tuesday, Silverman took to Twitter and urged Meretz supporters in Israel to get out and vote next Tuesday, in order to ensure the future of the left-wing party.
"ISRAEL! If you are a Meretz supporter you NEED to VOTE MARCH 17. Every vote counts. If you don’t vote, you can’t complain,” she tweeted.
Silverman's support of Meretz does not come with out its personal motivations – her sister, Rabbi Susan Silverman, is number 20 on the Meretz Knesset list. Although not a high enough position to promise her a seat in the Knesset, Rabbi Silverman is a reported friend of Meretz's leader Zahava Gal-On.
Meretz has upped its campaign in recent days as the party has publicly warned that it might mot receive enough votes to pass the election threshold of four Knesset seats.
Meretz is expected to lose some of its votes to the Zionist Union, headed by Isaac Herzog, formed by collaboration with Tzipi Livni's Hatnuah movement.
Gal-On has openly stated Meretz's support for Herzog, and would likely agree to sit in a coalition led by the Zionist Union.
