Last Tuesday 12 Israelis aged 16-18 have been detained by Cyprus police after a British woman alleged that she was raped at the Pambos Napa Rocks hotel in Ayia Napa. The remand of the young men was extended by eight days by a Famagusta District Court during a hearing on Thursday in order to allow all the DNA evidence to be examined.
In an interview with the UK newspaper the Daily Mail, British female holiday-makers said they are constantly harassed by the Israeli men - all in their late teens and early 20s - staying at the two-star establishment.
“One of my friends was asleep in her room, an Israeli came in and demanded sex. She screamed at him to get out, but the management do not seem to care,” said one girl.
The men at the hotel outnumber the women by 5-1, claim some of the tourists.
“The Israeli men come up behind you and just stand there. Not many of them speak English and it is creepy. I had no idea that it was like here. I do not feel safe,” added one of the girls.
In the meantime, from the testimony of the alleged rape victim it appears she had voluntarily agreed to go up to the 723 hotel room where three of the accused Israelis were staying. The woman said she had consented to engage in sexual activity with one of the men, not knowing that 11 of his friends would be present in the room as well.
"I knew some of the boys and we did have a relationship, but when I got to the room around midnight, everyone was drunk, I remember everything was blurred," the woman was quoted as saying in the Daily Mail. "I do remember that until about 1am, the friends I did not know raped me, some of them with a condom - and some of them without. They hurt my whole body."
The woman said she’d managed to escape after she fainted, prompting the men to stop. “I ran out of the room, met friends and they took me half naked to the clinic.”
One of the alleged victim’s friends told the Daily Mail the teenager was “in a terrible state” following the ordeal. “She had managed to put back on some of her clothes. There were tears pouring down her face and you could see the bruises on her body.”
