Tanzim, the armed wing of the Palestinian Liberation Organization's
Fatah
faction, was established by Yasser Arafat
in 1995 to offset the growing power of rival Islamic organizations such as Hamas
and Islamic Jihad.
Since the beginning of the Aqsa intifada in 2000, the Tanzim has played a prominent role in Palestinian clashes with Israeli security forces and also carried out terror attacks against Israeli civilians.
Tanzim
leader and prominent intifada figure Marwan Barghouti was arrested by Israel in 2002 and is held in an Israeli prison to this day.
