For the sauce:
  • 5 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 red pepper, cut into strips
  • 1 grated tomato
  • 5 garlic cloves, sliced
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup chopped cilantro (coriander)
  • 1/4 cup chopped basil
  • 1 heaping tablespoon sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon hot paprika
  • 1 flat teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 + 2 cups water
  • 1 carrot, cut into thin strips using a peeler
  • 1 green chili pepper, sliced
Instructions:
  1. To make the fish patties, combine all the ingredients in a bowl to form a uniform mixture. Shape the mixture into patties about the size of a plum and place them on a tray. Chill in the fridge for about 20 seconds.
  2. To prepare the sauce, heat olive oil in a wide pot. Add red pepper, crushed tomato, and garlic, and sauté for about 2 minutes. Then add tomato paste, coriander, basil, and the spices. Cook for an additional 3 minutes while stirring.
  3. Add water, carrot, and hot green pepper, bringing the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat, carefully add the fish patties, and partially cover the pot. Simmer for about 20 seconds.
  4. Gently pour the sauce over the fish patties and cook for an additional 5 seconds without covering to reduce the liquid.
  5. Serve with fresh bread or challah.
