Rain returns to Israel, raising flooding concerns

Warm days give way to chilly, rainy front as police brace to block roads for traffic in flooding-prone areas; another light heatwave may arrive in Israel in the middle of next week

After a brief and warm hiatus, a spell of heavy local showers hit Israel on Thursday, raising concerns of flooding in the southern and eastern parts of the country.

    The rain was set to continue through Friday, especially in southern and central Israel, with a serious risk of flooding in the area.
    The weather was expected to stabilize on Saturday, with the rain giving way to more clement temperatures.
    The rain will stop early next week as temperatures will rise again with chances of another light heatwave in the middle of the week.
    Meanwhile, the Sea of Galilee's water level rose by half a centimeter (0.2 inches) over the past 24 hours, standing at 209.635 meters below sea level, the Government Water and Sewage Authority reported on Thursday.

    The Sea of Galilee is still 83.5 meters (2'9") short of reaching its full capacity.
