Spain demands better conditions for Spanish citizen detained in Israel

Juana Ruiz Sanchez reportedly detained in West Bank city of Bethelem and accused of being involved in terrorist activity and funding terrorism for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine

Spain has demanded that Israel improve the conditions of Spanish citizen Juana Ruiz Sanchez who was detained there almost two weeks ago without charge, Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya said on Tuesday.

  • "We are in an intensive dialogue with Israeli authorities" about the case, Laya told reporters after a weekly cabinet meeting, adding that her ministry would continue to provide the maximum possible support.

    "We hope the investigation concludes soon so this citizen can find out what she is accused of if she is accused of anything," she said.
    According to Israeli media, Sanchez was arrested in the West Bank city of Bethelem two weeks ago and is currently being held at Hasharon Prison north of Tel Aviv.
    She is reportedly accused of being involved in terrorist activity and funding terrorism for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the group that claimed responsibility for the rocket fire from Gaza over the weekend.

    The report said that she has been married to her Palestinian husband for 35 years and works for a medical services NGO.
    It is not clear why Sanchez was arrested, the report said, adding that the Shin Bet domestic security service was leading the investigation.
    It also said that Sanchez had met with Spanish officials and that Jerusalem and Madrid were in contact on the issue.
