A significant improvement occurred Thursday in the condition of 14-year old Adir Basad who was injured by a Qassam rocket in Sderot Tuesday.
Basad’s doctors at the Barzilai hospital in Ashkelon said that he was conscious and breathing independently. The hospital’s Deputy Director Dr. Emil Hai said that Basad was taken off the respirator Thursday morning, and that he even managed to communicate a little with his family.
“We hope the improvement continues,” he said, but pointed out that in his present condition, any small change could affect Basad.
It was reported Wednesday that after a nightlong series of operations doctors had managed to stabilize the condition of the 14-year old, that he had been transferred to the recovery room and was out of the woods.
Doctors also said that the condition of Matan Cohen, the second teenager who was injured in the Qassam attack, continued to be moderate. The hospital stated that doctors were able to save Cohen's leg from complete amputation.
Psalms for healing
Basad and Cohen’s schoolmates in Sderot added a few chapters of Psalms for healing in their morning prayer. Most students arrived at school Thursday, but classes did not take place as usual and the exam which Basad and Cohen were studying for was canceled.
The school’s principal, Amit Ornbach, said, “The school has been manned with counselors and psychologists, and all home room teachers have been called in to the school, even those on holiday.”
Speaking of the students, Ornbach said, “Or goal is to get them back into routine. We must keep in mind that there also friends in the class that were with them during the incident.”
