The cabinet convened to discuss the situation on Israel's northern border and heard briefings from security officials on developments in Syria and Lebanon.

At the conclusion of the discussion, Olmert said that "Israel is not out for war with Syria, and we must be careful of miscalculations that might lead to deterioration in the security situation."

The prime minister also said that Israel has relayed this message of peace to Syria.

Olmert also demanded that ministers and IDF officers not get swept up in the whirlwind of incessant “babble” about a possible war, or negotiations for peace.

In recent weeks it has been reported that the prime minister was looking into different options for negotiations with Syria.
