4 dead in Arava road accident

Traffic accident on road to Eilat kills four; three injured near Kibbutz Ketura

Four people—including a child—died Sunday in a road accident between two cars on the road to Eilat. Three others, among them two children, were injured.

The four were identified as Roberta Bernstein, 49, of Jerusalem; her husband Haim Ze;ev Bernstein, 54; their daughter, Bat-Sheva Tzipora Bernstein, 18; and Sharon Sabag, 49, of Beit Lehem Haglilit.

The Bernstein couple's 11-year-old son, Moshe, was injured in the accident, as were Sharon's Sabag's 12-year-old son Nethanel and his father.

The road was full of vacationers traveling to and from Eilat for the Sukkot holidays.

The police said that initial findings suggested that the two cars, a Toyota and a Mitsubishi, collided head-on when the driver of the Mitsubishi veered into oncoming traffic for some unknown reason four kilometers north of Kibbutz Ketura.

The passengers of the vehicles were trapped in their cars for some time before they were rescued. The victims were evacuated in two helicopters to Soroka Hospital in Beersheba

Another accident was reported Monday morning between a car and a truck near the Nachshon junction on the way to Jerusalem that left the driver of the car moderately wounded.

Since the beginning of this year, 323 people have been killed in traffic accidents in Israel.

Last month, two children, residents of France on a visit to Israel, were killed and their father was injured in a road accident on the Arava road on their way back from Eilat in a head-on collision with a truck. According to estimates, the accident was caused when their father fell asleep at the wheel and veered from his lane.
