The Council of University Presidents (CUP) filed a petition with the National Labor Court Wednesday, asking it to issue an injunction against the lecturers' strike.
The lecturers have been striking since October, in protests of the ongoing erosion in their wages, which have not been updated since 2001.
Taking Action
Council of University Presidents announces first academic semester will be called off if senior faculty's strike is not over by January 13
Ongoing negotiations with the lecturers union have proven futile, leading CUP to announce that should the situation remain unresolved by January 13, they will cancel the academic semester.
"We mustn't reach a point when the semester is canceled." said Education Minister Yuli Tamir, adding her ministry is doing everything it can to avoid the predicament.
Gil Goldberg, president of the Tel Aviv University Student Union called on both parties to find a quick solution: "Instead of threatening each other, I suggest everyone get in a room and not come out until the find a solution. Neither the student body not the Israeli economy can afford the semester's cancellation."
All previous offers made to the lecturers by the CUP have been rejected, as they cited they were "bordering on servitude."
