Clinton: World will not wait indefinitely on Iran

US secretary of state says international community will not wait limitlessly for Islamic Republic to show that it is prepared to meet its international obligations. British Foreign Secretary Miliband says Tehran will never have a better opportunity to establish normal ties with rest of world

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Sunday the international community would not wait indefinitely for Iran to show that it is prepared to meet its international obligations.

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, whom Clinton met in London, said Iran would never have a better opportunity to establish normal ties with the rest of the world.

Six world powers met with Iran in Geneva earlier this month to press for details on its nuclear program. Clinton said the meeting was constructive but added, "Words are not enough. It must be followed by action."

The US and its allies fear Tehran wants to build an atomic bomb and is using what it calls a civilian nuclear energy program as cover. Iran is under UN penalties for refusing to stop enriching uranium, a key first step toward building a bomb.

Negotiations are due on October 19 in Vienna on a proposal to send Iranian uranium abroad for processing and return to Tehran. On October 25, UN inspectors are due to visit an enrichment plant near the holy city of Qom.

Clinton is on a tour of Europe is due to meet British Prime Minister Gordon Brown before traveling to Ireland later Sunday.
