Netanyahu praises son on eve of Bible Quiz final

Prime minister tells 15-year-old Avner, among 16 finalists of International Bible Contest, that he has already achieved victory

On the eve of Independence Day, just 24 hours before Avner Netanyahu was scheduled to compete in the International Bible Quiz, his father the prime minister told him that in his opinion, victory had already been achieved by his avid interest in the bible.

This weekend Avner returned home from a camp intended for Bible Quiz competitors in Jerusalem. His father welcomed him home.

"The fact that you have succeeded at such a young age in being one of 16 of the world's finest is a huge achievement," Benjamin Netanyahu told his son.

"It doesn't matter which place you get in the competition. The fact that at age 15 you came so far… is a huge victory."

Avner, of the youngest finalists of the quiz, reached the finals on his first year competing. Altogether 12,000 students from Israel and thousands more from abroad took part in the quiz.

The prime minister's son attends the ninth grade of a prestigious state school located near the Hebrew University, and is an alumnus of the Ofek program for gifted children.

His friends say he only prepared for four months, and that immediately after Independence Day he plans to return to his normal routine, which includes playing guitar, producing theater, and participating in various sports.
