King Abdullah of Jordan hosted Welfare Minister Yitzhak Herzog in his palace on Tuesday, and said the coming period is a moment of historic opportunity, which coming generations will judge today's leaders by."
"Therefore, we must not miss it," the king said.
Abdullah added that the sides must continue working towards peace and make every effort in direct negotiations. This requires the leaders act with courage and responsibility, he said.
About two weeks ago Abdullah warned that a failure to resolve the issue of the settlement construction freeze is liable to erupt into violence within the current year.
Regarding the behavior of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the talks, Jordan's leader said everyone knows what moves must be taken.
"Peace is the best deal the two sides can achieve," he said. "I believe if they were to present their public the option of voting for peace or voting for war, most people on both sides would vote for peace."
Abdullah conveyed the same message a short time after his speech at the UN General Assembly.
"We will all lose if the talks fail," he said. "We will all gain if peace is achieved. The collective influence of all of us is the key (to ensuring peace is achieved)."
