Petition filed with High Court to nix rotation bill passed in Knesset

Ynet|Updated:
The Movement for Quality Government in Israel petitioned the high court on Thursday against a bill passed in the Knesset to allow Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Blue & White leader Benny Gantz to hold the position of premier in rotation in the future coalition government.
Elad Shraga, petitioner for the movement said the legislation that was passed is "a blatant attempt to bring down the basic principles of Israeli democracy, all to help an indicted prime minister escape justice."
The Meretz party said it too plans to petition the court.
On Wednesday the High Court ruled it would not interfere in the terms of the coalition agreement before they become law.
The Knesset passed the bill on Thursday in what they hoped would be clearing the path to form a new government by next week.
