Leviathan gas field's torch was lit at noon off the shores of Israel, the Ministry of Energy said on Sunday.
The ministry said the torch lighting is a safety measure that prevents air pollution.
Levithan's operator, Noble Energy, reported to the Carmel Coast Council that the torch was lit due to a malfunction in the field's TEX-1 turbine.
The supply of natural gas was reportedly not stopped, during the event.
