U.S. Secretary of State toured the Golan Heights on Thursday with his Israeli counterpart Foreign Minsiter Gabi Ashkenazi.
"I very much wanted to come here on this trip to tell the world that we have it right. That we, the United States has it right. That Israel has it right," Pompeo said.
The secretary said he remembers the pressure Israel was under to return the Golan Heights to Israeli hands and wondered aloud what would have happened if Syrian President Hafez al Assad has been in control of the mountain region overlooking Israel.
"Each nation has the right to defend itself in its own sovereignty," he said.
