Artificial intelligence company Anthropic, developer of the chatbot "Claude," will pay $1.5 billion as a settlement in a class-action lawsuit filed by three authors who claimed the company took copies of their works to train its chatbot without their consent, constituting copyright infringement. The agreement reached will be presented to the court next Monday, under which the company will pay about $3,000 for each of the 500,000 books specified in the lawsuit and included in the agreement. The three authors, Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber and Kirk Wallace Johnson, filed the lawsuit on behalf of themselves and other authors and publishers.
