The Wall Street Journal reported that the Lebanese army has largely succeeded in disarming Hezbollah in its strongholds in southern Lebanon. With assistance from Israeli intelligence, the new government led by President Joseph Aoun has achieved approximately 80% of its objectives in disarming militias in the region, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said in an interview. He added that the goal is "for the government to have a monopoly on armaments throughout the country." The report also stated that Israel and the U.S., which assisted the Lebanese government in these efforts, were surprised by the rapid pace of weapons collection.
