Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić resigns to run for prime minister

|
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has resigned to run in early elections for prime minister. Vučić's second presidential term was set to end in May next year. Serbia's constitution bars him from running for a third term, and he announced he is resigning to lead the right-wing Serbian Progressive Party in elections to be held on October 25. In 2024, protests erupted against Vučić and his government over the collapse of a concrete canopy at a railway station in Novi Sad in the north of the country, which killed 16 people. Many in Serbia linked the disaster to widespread corruption in government infrastructure projects.
