Smotrich attempts to advance fuel price reduction – Treasury officials object

|
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has ordered to advance a reduction in fuel excise tax, after a liter of 95-octane gasoline jumped to 8.25 shekels today. According to a statement from the Finance Minister's office, professional discussions are being held to formulate the threshold for the reduction and the precise mechanism. However, sources in the Treasury, including the legal advisory, oppose the move. Additionally, at this stage it is unclear whether the move is even legal since we are in an election period. And it is possible that the Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, will be forced to intervene and decide on the issue.
