The U.S. Congress will commemorate for the first time the Farhud pogrom in Iraq, in memory of hostage Shlomo Mansour - who survived the 1941 Baghdad pogrom but was murdered by Hamas on October 7. The event will take place on Capitol Hill this Wednesday, with the participation of members of Congress, diplomats and representatives of the Iraqi-Jewish community. Expected speakers include Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, former Special Envoy for Antisemitism and current IAC (Israeli-American Community) Chairman Elan Carr, and Rabbi Brian Shemesh. The ceremony organizers aim to highlight the connection between past pogroms and today's terrorism. "Shlomo's case illustrates how Jews who escaped antisemitic violence in the Middle East are experiencing it again - this time in Israel," said Maurice Shohet, chairman of the World Organization of Jews from Iraq.
