European leaders addressed the war in Ukraine ahead of the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, stating in a joint declaration that "the path to peace in Ukraine cannot be determined without Ukraine." The statement was signed by French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Finnish President Alexander Stubb. They added that only support for Ukraine and pressure on Russia would aid diplomatic efforts and noted they are ready to provide support for this.
