A new report released in Florida reveals that in 2024 and 2025, nearly 30 sloths died at an animal import facility operated by Sanctuary World Imports in Orlando. Among them, 21 sloths imported from Guyana died in December 2024 after temperatures at the facility dropped below 13 degrees Celsius. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, sloths are unable to regulate their body temperature as well as other mammals and function optimally at temperatures between 20–30 degrees Celsius. Subsequently, 10 sloths were ordered from Peru, arriving in February 2025. Two of them died immediately upon arrival at the facility and several more died later.
